Comparison - What a nasty thing!

Writer's picture: Moriah ScottMoriah Scott

A mirror is an object of reflection. It reflects what it sees. It doesn’t necessarily reflect what you want to see, but it reflects what is in front of it. It is the viewers job to interpret what the reflection in the mirror means. A shiny red apple can be placed on a wooden table in front of the mirror. The mirror cannot tell you if the apple is good or not, or if the table is sturdy. All the mirror can tell you, is that there is an apple on a wooden table.

Imagine your life like a mirror. It reflects what is right in front of it.

When you look into your mirror, what do you see? Do you see the Vogue Model with the perfect body on page 7? Do you see the sophisticated woman from your church, that has the killer shoes and a nice car? Do you see the couple form your university that has been together since college and who are now married with kids? Do you see what you don’t have? Do you see the person that you wish you could be or the extravagant life you wish you had? Are those your reflections you are seeing or the reflections of others. I would wager that some people don’t see anything in their mirror, simply because they are too distracted looking at someone else’s reflection.

Comparison is like having a mirror right in front of you, but you can’t see your reflection, because you are too distracted looking at someone else’s reflection in their mirror.

We live in a society of people that are walking around looking at everyone else’s mirrors but their own. We look at the reflection of someone else and wonder why our reflection doesn’t measure up to that persons. I wouldn’t even call it compassion, in all honest it is envy. Let’s just call a spade a spade.

Sometimes we find ourselves wishing we had the existence of others. We ask ourselves, why is their life so much better then mine? These kinds of questions cause us to be unsatisfied, lonely and bitter. We become unthankful and immobile. We lose focus and we forget to live the life we were given; and because we are so enamored with someone else’s identity, we lose our own.

Jeremy Lin, who is a point guard for the Atlanta Hawks, and an amazing man of God (You will probably hear me quote him a lot in my blogs), has this quote on his twitter page that I thought was so good:

“Spend all your time comparing and chasing other people and you’ll realize you have no identity yourself! Be the best you!” - Jeremy Lin

I don’t have enough words to express how true that statement is. Think about it. If we are so enamored with other people’s identity, you won’t have your own. If you are so caught up in the lives of others, then you will forget to live your own life. You will forget to move, and immobility leads to death; death of dreams, hopes and purpose.

Here is the 411. You are You. You were created with a purpose and you were created in the image of God. What you have been given is good enough to work with; and that is what you must do, learn to work with what you have.

You are beautiful enough. You are talented enough. You are equipped to live your life. You may not have all the money, influence or people that you need. But you are enough. You were given a life to live. Be thankful, be the best version of you and live your life to the fullest.

We have to stop comparing ourselves to others. Everyone has their own reflection. You have no clue what people’s lives are actually like. Remember, all the mirror can show is what it sees, it doesn’t show you what the reflection means. You do not know if the apple is good or if the table is sturdy. So, don’t waste your life wishing you had something, you don’t even know is real. And don't waste your life wanting to be someone you were not meant to be.

Prayer if you need it:

Father God,

I pray that we will be thankful for the life that you have given us. Please help us not to compare our lives to others. Remind us that you put us in our lives for a reason and you have purpose for us. Help us to know that we are enough and ultimately that you are enough. Lord I pray that we would stop comparing our lives to others and begin to be thankful for the life you gave us.

In the name of Jesus, we pray,

Amen
